The Church of the Holy Unification is a religion of many disparate sects, although all sects share one thing in common: they see the many gods of the multiverse as incarnations of the One True God. Most members of the church are condescendingly tolerant of other religions - seeing such polytheistic practices as primitive and ignorant – but extreme sects do exist within the Church.
The religion of the Church is most prolific in
Sanctuary, where it is headquartered in a building of cavernous halls, baroque ornamentation and soaring towers. The
Chamber Prime conducts a city census every 33 years, with the latest suggesting that practicing Unificationists currently make up about a third of the population.
There have been calls to outlaw some of the more extreme sects from Sanctuary but the motion is mired in Sanctuarian politics, with some parties claiming that such an act undermines the Pact of Tolerance, whilst others claim that the attitude of such extreme sects as the Sword of God is in direct contravention of Sanctuary’s Three Pacts.
Some of the more notable sects
- The Golden Circlet This pantheistic sect believes that the multiverse and the One True God are the same. Thus, every living and non-living thing within the multiverse is part of God. Members are renowned for the charity, benevolence and wise council. This sect is also extremely intolerant of undeath, which it sees as a unnatural violation of the One True God, a disease which must be cured.
- The Farseekers: This sect believes that the One True God extends beyond the multiverse and that the Great Sphere is only one part of a far greater entity. The Farseekers are obsessed with the Beyond, believing that one can unearth the secrets of the multiverse by gazing into it. In truth, the beyond is so alien to the multiverse that those Farseekers who have obtained such a glimpse, have been irrevocably and mentally scarred by the experience. Most Sanctuarians view Farseekers as erratic, unreliable and incomprehensible.
- Sword of God: This extreme sect, which is only rumoured to exist, believes that the worship of anything other than the One True God as blasphemy. They often claim that the ‘gods’ of other religions are nothing other than false idols or daemons. They are merciless and fanatical in their goal of undermining all religions other than the One True Faith.
