Sanctuary

  • Arkady, Captain Jym; Legendary Captain of the Spinning Coin: Jym is a gruff, grizzled veteran of the Between who claims to have seen it all, and probably has. To become one of ‘his boys’ (a term he uses when talking about the crew of the Spinning Coin, irrespective of whether they are male of female) is considered as a great mark of prestige amongst Tweeners. Nearly every great captain of recent years has spent time crewing as one of Arkady’s boys. Modern folklore recounts that Arkady once kept the Chamber Philosophick in heated debate for well over a week with the flippant comment: “If it aint the Tween, it’s a Plane, and the Tween is everything else.” Arkady has close ties to the Chamber Geographick but his anarchic outlook, large mouth and influence over other captains has made him unpopular with some of the other Chambers, in particular the Chambers Prime and Ascendant. Arkady is particularly vocal in condemning Sanctuary’s more recent meddlesome stance which he considers to be in violation of the Pact of Tolerance.
  • Armund, Ley; Honourable Fellow of the Chamber Philosophick: Ley is currently developing the Taxonomic Scheme for the Classification of all Living Things for the Chamber Philosophick. Whilst he has a superb reputation for academic brilliance, he is more commonly recognised for his extremely acerbic nature, unpleasant disposition and caustic verbal sniping at the other Chambers, particularly the Chamber Ascendant. Recently, his attitude has caused so much friction between the Chambers Philosophick and Ascendant that the Chamber Prime is considering demoting his membership to that of a Fellow.
  • Harmann, Henrietta Illias; Most Honourable Fellow of the Chamber Philosophick: Proclaimed philosopher and author of the Theory of a Spheroid Cosmology, Henrietta was widely considered to be the most pre-eminent fellow of the Great Chambers in recent history. Current rumours suggest that she was earmarked to take a place at the head of the Chamber Prime before her untimely demise.
  • Harmann, Sofia; Honourable Fellow of the Chamber Philosophick: Daughter of Henrietta, Sofia is a great philosopher in her own right, widely respected, and possibly an equal to her mother. Nevertheless, Sofia labours in the shadow of her mother’s truly epic reputation and deeds. Sofia is currently responsible for the creation of the Chamber Philosophick’s Taxonomic Scheme for the Further Classification of all Living Things by Knowledge, Skill and History which has led her to spend much time in the field. Sofia's exact chronological age is uncertain due to the extreme amount of planar travel she has undergone including through planes with unusual temporal variances, but relative to Sanctuary's time-line she is just over 500 years old.
  • The Lady: Whilst the government of Sanctuary is not entirely clear, most residents acknowledge the Lady - the enigmatic head of the Chamber Prime - as the principle power behind the city. No one knows what the Lady’s goals are, or what she looks like. Mysterious and secretive, the Lady communicates with the Chamber Prime alone, and even then interaction is via a child-sized homunculus made from polished bone and ivory. Legend tells that the Lady is the only known being to have emerged from entombment in Wicallen’s Pillar with their faculties intact. The nature of her crime has long been forgotten and she has governed the city ever since: setting up the Great Chambers and having the casting vote in the Chamber Prime.
  • Lady Mirabel, Emily; Author of Currents and Conduits: Emily spent her early life with the Chamber Geographick, exploring the multiverse in search of truth and adventure. Upon her return to Sanctuary she wrote Currents and Conduits, supposedly based her experiences. Despite her questionable talents as an author, Currents and Conduits was an astounding success and Emily retired a very wealthy woman. Armund Ley once famously said, “Currents and Conduits is such an appallingly tragic pack of lies that one wonders whether Emily uncovered any truths at all!”.
  • Levante, Jayne; Captain of the Fickle Bishop: Jayne is the arch-rival of Jym Arkady and the only person rumoured to have sailed over the Perpendicular (much to Arkady’s annoyance). Whilst Arkady and Levante are rarely on (polite) speaking terms with each other, it is obvious to everyone else that the pair shares a deep-seated admiration and respect for each other (not that they would ever admit it). Jayne is free-spirited, with a reputation for nurturing outstanding crews. Jaynes is also exceptionally good at unravelling Arkady’s often convoluted and disreputable plots, usually to her own benefit.
  • Olov: This exceptionally well-travelled scholar is believed to originate from Gygaxia. Olov seems to be particularly gifted at getting himself and any associates into trouble and is rumoured to go by several different identities. Hangsider’s should beware: Olov may look like an easy mark but he dabbles in the arcane and is extremely well connected.
  • Wiles, Benton; Former Fellow of the Chamber Philosophick (now expelled) and more recently associated with the Chamber Geographick: Wiles is, and always has been, an adventurer at heart. His recent frustration with the scientific process led to the removal of his fellowship to the Chamber Philosophick. He’s now back to doing what he loves best: Sailing the Tween, leading young would-be adventurers astray, and getting up to all sorts of mischief.
