EditSynopsisWeskell's Legion is an independent military force that operates in Civizia. Formed one-hundred and fifty years ago by Tor Weskell, the Legion quickly distinguished itself as a premier fighting force. The commonly held belief is "One company of the Legion is better than a regiment of any other military force, and for only half the cost." Weskell recruited heavily from both civilized and more barbaric nations and even other races, molding the Legion into a balanced and well-disciplined force capable of undertaking any contract.
When Tor Weskell died, leadership of the Legion was passed to the Council of Command comprised of the Force Commanders. Promotion in the Legion is purely by merit and leadership capability, allowing the best troopers to rise easily into positions of authority.
Though the Legion is not an actual nation and lacks a geographical boundary, it is effectively a sovereign entity answering to no monarch or state. Further, it has been around long enough that many children are effectively born into the Legion, whether they choose to join the Legion themselves upon reaching maturity or else seek their own fate elsewhere.
The Legion accepts any recruit that is willing to leave his or her old life and loyalties behind and swear a pledge of fealty and brotherhood. Once sworn in, members of the Legion are immune to local law, and all past deeds are effectively wiped away as no sovereign nation wants to tangle with the Legion needlessly. Henceforth, new recruits are subject to the justice of the First Tor, which is a sparely worded miliary code of conduct laid down by Tor Weskell himself; it is very unforgiving of transgressions against the unit and superior officers in particular. Recruits sign on for a minimum of four years, but almost no one ever leaves the Legion...alive.
EditMagicThe Legion employs a large number of Seers, to help plan battles and maintain lines of communication. Ecclesiasts of various gods are also common. The quartemaster's include a few Alchemists in their number as well.EditDetails- Heraldry: Per Fess sable and gules, a falcon vorant argent.
EditAdventure Seeds Who are these guys? They're EVERYWHERE!: As a mercenary organization, a detachment of the Legion might be found almost anywhere in central Barbaria and possibly even beyond. Depending upon the nature of their contract they might be a welcome presence or not.
Bountiful Deserter: the Legion pays a bounty of five gold for live deserters.
Regroup: elements of the Legion are spread far and yon, usually in multiples of a thousand. However in between contracts surviving elements regroup with the main body to rearm, train new recruits, get some rest and relaxation, and eventually reconfigure and redeploy. This is a process that can take a few months and the main body will bivouac someplace near enough to a major supply chain or city to ensure provisioning and entertainment are near to hand. The influx of the hardened warriors of the legion and their camp followers can be a somewhat alarming experience for the locals and those passing through the area.
