Synopsis

Towards the southern end of the Ecreasian chain of islands are a small group of volcanic islands, some of them still active, that have never been settled by the Ecreasians. Known to harbor various exotic species of birds, tortoises, and bizarre creatures that have some value as exotic curiosities, the islands are most notable for having large deposits of high-quality obsidian that fetches a high price on the open market.

However, the islands are dangerous to tread upon. Not only are the islands inhabited by particularly barbaric and primitive human and Cruachan savages, there are also confirmed sightings of lethal fire salamanders and legends of even more fantastic beasts.

The largest and most infamous of the Obsidian Isles is called Groka-gar by the natives; it features extensive ruins including what appears to be an ancient temple on the side of the volcano, partially buried in volcanic ash. The ruins have been only partially explored due to the great dangers of the local flora and fauna and extreme aggression of the natives. Lights and chanting can sometimes be detected from aboard ships sailing nearby and suspicious sailors give the island a wide berth.

Magic

Some of the savage tribes are Daemon-worshipers and have a tradition of Daemon summoning.

There are also some naturally occurring Occultists of various types among the tribes, usually in the cultural role of witch doctors or the like.

The far southwestern coast has proven to be a very fertile ground for fishing and whaling. Reports of monstrous sea creatures have kept exploitation of the area to a hardy and well armed few.

Adventure Seeds

  • Ecreasian Outpost: Ecreasia attempted to station a garrison and naval station called Maropor on Groka-gar a few years ago. With docks for a dozen ships, basic stores and repair capabilities, and sufficient berthing for a full Fist of Mirrin (five units of one hundred), the garrison got off to a promising start, and then fell incommunicado. An expidition was mounted and arrived to discover the garrison deserted. Signs of struggle included deep claw gouges on several walls and faded bloodstains, but not one bone or scrap of equipment. Scrawled in a post at the back of the main hall was a single word: "GAERZIMAEL".

  • Mysterious Tower: There is a small island off the southwest coast of Groka-gar with a tall tower sitting on a rocky atoll which is the highest point on the island. No one has ever visited the tower and returned to tell the tale of it.

  • Volcanic Temple: the Chosen of Therus in Ecreasia have been looking for a band of brave souls to investigate the abandoned Groka-garian temple for years. Thus far they've had no takers.

  • Sunken Plunder: Recently a small merchant flotilla and a pair of Mirrin triremes reportedly did battle with a giant sea beast. Three merchant vessels and one of the triremes sank but in relatively shallow water; supposedly they are visible from the surface in good light. One of the merchant vessels was laden with, among other riches, a chest containing four goblets each carved from a single piece of obsidian worth a tidy fortune.
