EditSynopsisDurok started as a standard dwarven outpost, a fortress-city carved into the mountains of Albizia, surmounting an extensive mining effort. The iron mined from this area is very high quality and highly sought after. The outpost rapidly spread to include five large underground cities, linked by trade throughways and mine tunnels. At the height of it's power, the Kingdom of Durok had over 75,000 subjects.
Approximately 400 years ago miners in the now-lost city of Kaladurin broke through into an extensive natural cave system infested with a particularly vicious breed of Daemons that had been trapped there for time immemorial. Freed from their captivity the Daemon horde rapidly spread throughout the mines, attacking and killing every dwarf they came across. Kaladurin fell, followed within a year by Modak. The dwarves of the remaining three holds of Durok, Cavad and Rodur have been under seige by the seemingly endless hordes of Daemons ever since those dark days of blood and terror.
In the modern era the siege has reached a stasis point, with neither side making headway against the other. The Daemons cannot break the impressive fortifications of the remaining fortress-cities, but the dwarves cannot effectively sally forth without taking losses that they cannot easily replace. The dwarves often seek to hire specialists to aid them in their dark war under the mountain, and though the risks are extreme the rewards are commensurate; some of the most powerful and capable heroes and mercenaries in the Realm have sought employment thusly over the centuries but few are willing to do more than one tour of six moons and veteran survivors have spoken of dark Daemon-filled nightmares that haunt them ever after.
EditMagicDwarven Runecrafters are said by many to be the most skilled in the world; indeed some dwarves go so far as to claim that they invented the art, or that it was taught to them by Kadrin himself in the ancient days. The Runecrafters of Durok have had many centuries to ply their trade towards war, forging and enchanting weapons specially designed to carve the thick skin of the Daemons like butter.EditAdventure Seeds
