EditSynopsisStanding tall on the verge between the dunes of the open desert and the the flat black sand wastes of Sharmut, is a weathered granite inselberg which shelters an artesian-fed pool of water on its lee side, and is ringed in by semi-permanent white linen merchant tents circled into a ersatz bazaar.
Browned Dwarves in off-white linen robes inhabit this out-of-place oddity, and in addition to controlling one of the rare few oasis near the black wastes, they also offer a host of novelties crafted from glass of all colors. Their wares include not only trinkets and blown-glass sculptures of remarkable beauty that sell for lordly sums, but also steel-hard and deadly sharp weapons cast from the black sands of Sharmut that are not only gorgeous but also capable of slicing flesh to ribbons; they also never need sharpening. Called Zabaraga blades, they are treasured by the warriors of Silizia above practically all other weapons, and also can fetch a princely price further abroad.
Theft and banditry is always a possibility, but the clever Dwarves, who live within the inselberg and in the granite shelf beneath the sand, are just as crafty with their security precautions as they are with their craftsmanship. The peoples of Silizia have many and varied stories of foolish would-be thieves who sought to rob the Dwarves and paid the price of their foolishness.
EditDetails
The Dwarves maintain a standing guard of one hundred professional and very well armed Dwarven warriors at all times during the day to patrol the trading and caravansary areas and a fair-sized security perimeter, with reinforcements another hundred strong on ready-reserve within the inselberg itself. If given sufficient warning before a more serious attack than such forces could resist the Dwarves would simply fall back into the inselberg and batten down the hatches, leaving any foreign travelers and merchants to their fate. The Dwarves retreat underground a full hour before sun set, and stay locked down behind their stone doors until an hour after dawn.
During the hottest part of midday the Dwarves are particularly alert and careful, due to the Sharmutian shadowcobras penchant to come out and hunt while other creatures are resting and attempting to find shade.
